General Aftercare

Wash hands thoroughly prior to contact on or near the area of your healing piercing. Leave the piercing alone except when you are cleaning the piece. It is not necessary or advisable to rotate the jewellery while healing except or during cleaning. For the first 2 weeks clean your piercing 3- 4 times a day, 3x with your Neil Med Aftercare Spray & 1x with a mild liquid hand soap (shower time) Check twice daily with washed hands to ensure the balls are screwed on tight. Make sure your bedding is clean and changed frequently while you are healing.

ALL EPIDERMAL (EXTERNAL ) PIERCINGS

• Wash hands thoroughly with liquid antibacterial soap.
• Prepare the area by rinsing or soaking with warm water to remove any dried matter (whilst showring is the best time).
• Dab the area dry with a clean single use cotton tip.
• Apply aftercare solution (neil med) by spraying the area thoroughly, holding a clean tissue under the piercing to catch the excess, do not dry the piercing with a tissue after you spray.
• A thick creamy discharge is normal ( this can dry to a hard yellow matter)
• Tenderness is normal but if the piece becomes painful, contact us.

TONGUE/LIP/LABRET

• Sucking rather than chewing of clean crushed ice immediately after the piercing will greatly reduce swelling of the area.
• After meals during the entire initial healing time, rinse mouth for 30 seconds with an alcohol free mouthwash such as savacol (or salt water wash)
• A new soft bristled toothbrush should be purchased to help reduce the bacteria that are introduced into your mouth.
• Don’t be alarmed if you see a thick yellow secretion coming from the piercing. This is blood plasma, lymph, and dead cells, which is perfectly normal. This is not pus, but indicates a healing pierce.

SALT WATER SOLUTION RECIPE

Dissolve a pinch (1/4 teaspoon) sea salt with no iodine into one cup (250mls) of warm to hot water in a clean cup. A stronger solution is not better as you can burn your piercing with too much salt. Salt water soaks help to stimulate oxygen and blood circulation which facilitates healing.

WHAT TO AVOID

Don’t use alcohol peroxide betadine or methylated spirits, they are overly strong and drying which can hinder healing. Don’t apply any antibiotic ointments, gels or creams on your piercing. These prevent oxygen from reaching the wound and form a sticky residue which can cause complications. They are not designed for use on healing piercings. Don’t use band aids on a healing piercing. They limit air circulation and the adhesive can irritate the surrounding area. Avoid submerging your piercing in pools, lakes. Spas etc, unless you feel confident that the water is clean enough for you and your piercing.
